Hereditary Spherocytosis Unmasked by Human Parvovirus B19 Induced Aplastic Crisis in a Family

چکیده مقاله:
Human parvovirus (HPV) B19 induced aplastic crisis in a family leading to the diagnosis of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a very rare condition being barely reported in the literature. We herein report a 4-year-old girl, her brother, and their mother who all presented with progressive pallor and jaundice after a febrile illness. The HPV B19 was diagnosed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and positive serology for specific anti-HPV B19 IgM. They were further diagnosed with having HS. The clinical importance of this report is that in the case of an abrupt onset of unexplained severe anemia and jaundice, one should consider underlying hemolytic anemias mostly hereditary spherocytosis complicated by HPV B19 aplastic crisis. Herein, we report the occurrence of this condition, simultaneously in three members of a family. The distinguished feature of this report is that all affected family members developed some degrees of transient pancytopenia, not only anemia, all simultaneously in the course of their disease.

متن کاملAn Adult with Aplastic Crisis induced by Human Parvovirus B19 as an Initial Presentation of Hereditary Spherocytosis
The association between aplastic crisis and human parvovirus (HPV) B19 infection is well described in patients with sickle cell anemia. This association has also been described, although much less frequently, in patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS). However, most cases of aplastic crises in patients with HS and induced by HPV B19 have been reported in children or adolescents. In this pap...

Teenage sisters were found to have hereditary spherocytosis when they presented in aplastic crisis associated with otherwise asymptomatic parvovirus infection. Such patients may present a source of cross-infection to others at risk.
متن کاملParvovirus B19 induced transient aplastic crisis in an immunocompetent child.
Viral-induced aplastic crisis is an important cause of unexplained anaemia. It becomes significant in the context of an immunocompromised host. However, it is commonly overlooked in a well-nourished immunocompetent host. Parvovirus B19-induced transient crisis is one such example. Bone marrow study is a commonly performed preliminary investigation for an unexplained anaemia and can provide impo...
متن کاملOccult hereditary spherocytosis and human parvovirus infection.
The human parvovirus (HPV) is believed to be the causative agent of erythema infectiosum, or fifth disease. 1 Transient aplastic crisis linked to HPV infection has been described in several types of hemolytic anemias, congenital or acquired, such as sickle cell disease, thalassemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemias, and hereditary spherocytosis.2-8 In some instances, the underlying hemolytic anemia...
